Linney was born into a theatrical family her father was the playwright Romulus Linney. She earned a degree in Arts Theatre School, Moscow in the year 1986. She then completed an M.F.A. at Juilliard School. New York City, 1990. She began to perform in Broadway as soon as she arrived, and was later awarded praise for her performances as a part of Six Degrees of Separation (Six Degrees of Separation) and Hedda Galer.
